Turn off
data
roaming
We've written
previously about
how using large
amounts of data
on your mobile
phone can
severely hurt
your wallet, and
how it is a good
idea to avoid
using data
unless
absolutely
necessary.
Here's how to do
this on some
popular
handsets:
To
turn off/on Data
Roaming on an
Apple® iPhone™,
tap Settings
then General,
then Network,
slide Data
Roaming to Off
or On.
To turn off
Data Roaming on
a BlackBerry®
Bold, select
Options from the
home menu, then
select Mobile
Network, Select
Data Services,
choose Off, Off
When Roaming, or
On.
To turn off
Data Roaming on
an HTC Desire or
Wildfire
(Android™
operating
system), press
the Menu key,
tap Settings,
then Wireless
and Networks,
then Mobile
Networks then
tap Data roaming
(Tick = on, No
Tick = off).
To turn off
Data Roaming on
an HTC 7 Mozart
and HD7
(Windows® Phone
7), tap
Settings, then
Mobile Network
then select the
data roaming
option, Roam =
on, Don’t roam =
off.

Lost
bags
Emirates
Airlines
(now the
largest
international
airline
by
passenger-kilometers
flown)
has been
busted
by the
US
Department
of
Transport
for
"unfair
and
deceptive"
baggage
practices.
Emirates
copped a
$100,000 fine
for providing
limited
compensation
when passengers'
bags were
delayed, and for
stating that its
contractual
fine-print
limited its
liability.
We suspect
Emirates is not
the only airline
playing this
particular
trick.
International
flights are
governed by the
Montreal
Convention,
which airlines
are liable for
damages caused
by lost, delayed
or damaged
baggage up to a
limit of about
A$1700 unless
the carrier has
taken all
reasonable
measures to
prevent it. The
Montreal
Convention also
does not permit
blanket
exclusions or
allow carriers
to disclaim
liability for
categories of
items, such as
jewellery,
electronics, or
high value
items.
Don't let an
international
airline claim
that its fine
print limits its
lost-baggage
compensation.

How much data?
A
handy table from
Telstra Bigpond
shows how much
data you might
use for typical
activities (your
mileage may
vary):

Of course, if
you are roaming
overseas using
one of Telstra's
SIMs, there is
an associated
large cost for
these activities
($240 per hour
for gameplaying
anyone?).
