Sporting rates for global roaming

Media release

16 June 2005

Travellers to Wimbledon, the Ashes, US Open Championships or one of the other big coming events are being advised to research mobile phone options before they go.

“Lots of people are going overseas at this time of year and many end up spending much more on calls home than they expected to.  But there are low cost alternatives,” says vRoam Global’s CEO Danny Nathanson.

vRoam Global’s primary service delivers savings of up to 45% off usual international roaming charges by providing customers with UK or USA SIM cards.  For example:

vRoam’s SIM cards have a local number.  This means you can call other vRoam users in your party or other local numbers at close to local rates (49c a minute in the UK).   Retrieving voicemail is just a local call too.  These efficiencies have attracted a number of travellers, participants and administrators going to major events such as last year’s Olympics in Greece.

“Those using  normal global roaming don’t realise if they call across London from one Australian mobile number to another their call will be routed and charged via Australia,” says Nathanson. With vRoam this is only a local call.

Friends and family in Australia can still reach you on your normal Australian mobile number if you arrange vRoam’s ‘Follow Me’ service.

6p per minute calls to Australia

Alternatively, vRoam offers a pre-paid UK SIM card.  This provides exceptionally low rates for calls back to Australia of just 6p (14c) a minute.  The card costs just $35 and includes $12 of calls.
